A new HMB Catholic Elementary school is on the way!

Along with the announcement of a new Public Elementary school for Half Moon Bay, the Ontario Ministry of Education announced that funding for a new Catholic Elementary School has been approved for Half Moon Bay as well! Last year St. Cecilia at Greenbank Rd. & Cambrian Rd. opened with portables due to high enrolment. The new school will help alleviate that pressure.

Our Zone's OCSB Trustee Alison Baizana confirmed that the school will open in September 2016 with Kindergarten to Grade 6, and is expected to be located in the Rivermist Rd. and Dundonald Dr. area.

The Campaign for a Half Moon Bay Public Elementary School

As many of you are aware land at Millars Sound Way has been set aside for Half Moon Bay Elementary School in our community under the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board. A very important vote is going to take place Tuesday, October 1st 2013. Currently, constructing a Half Moon Bay Public Elementary School is number two (2) on the priority list, but that could change for the good or the bad at the meeting on Tuesday October 1st.

As your Community Association we have met and decided to act to encourage and support members of our community to join the campaign to keep Half Moon Bay School a Top 2 Priority for Capital Funding. The timeline is tight and we know everyone is busy so we have come up with a bunch of options for everyone.

The OCDSB meeting will be held Tuesday, October 1st at 7:00pm at 133 Greenbank Rd

We Need Your Help!

  1. Sign up to be part of the Half Moon Bay Community Association Delegation to attend the OCDSB Meeting. (We need a minimum of 5 community members to pre-register).
  2. Attend the OCDSB meeting and register to speak in favour of Half Moon Bay Elementary School as a resident. The speaking time is 2 minutes and it can include a question.

Email Carrie Lynn at treasurer@hmbca.ca to register or if you need support with speakers notes or questions about the process.

If you are not able to attend the meeting...there are still ways to support this campaign!

Our community needs to be a strong voice in the ears and inboxes of our elected school board Trustees.

Here is a link to the webpage http://www.ocdsb.ca/ab-ocdsb/bot/myt/Pages/default.aspx to contact ALL trustees. Other communities are mobilizing and we need to be heard that this school is a priority for our community.

Please also get in touch with Jan Harder, our City Councillor to ask for her support. Jan’s email is jan.harder@ottawa.ca.

And of course, for Twitter Users #hmbschool is available!

For support and questions please get in touch with Carrie Lynn at treasurer@hmbca.ca.

Groundbreaking planned for third French-language Catholic elementary school in Barrhaven

An update from Jan Harder.

Congratulations to the Conseil des Écoles catholiques du Centre-Est for breaking ground on a new French-language Catholic elementary school in Barrhaven on Wednesday.

The official groundbreaking took place on the future site of the new school to be located at 2450 River Mist Road in Barrhaven.

The construction of a Catholic elementary school in Barrhaven will make it possible to better serve that area's growing population of students entitled to receive French-language Catholic education. The new school will have a capacity of 389 students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6. A daycare will also be built offering 26 additional spaces for the children in the area. The opening of the new school is slated for September 2013.
