School board trustee resigns, citing political divisions and game-playing.
OTTAWA — Outspoken public school trustee Pam FitzGerald is stepping down.
Citing “deep political division among trustees” and her own health problems, the trustee for the municipal College ward announced Thursday in a statement to Ottawa-Carleton District School Board trustees and board staff that she will formally resign later this month.
“There are games played at the school-board level that you would hope wouldn’t be played, particularly when there’s no material gain for the politician involved and when it’s children’s livelihoods at stake,” she said in an interview.
“I don’t see an easy way to go forward and, given my health problems, I don’t have the strength to do it as this point in time.”
FitzGerald, 58, announced in December that she had been diagnosed with colon cancer.
