Fire in Half Moon Bay

OTTAWA — A couple and their child are displaced following a kitchen fire that caused smoke damage throughout a home in Barrhaven Wednesday afternoon.

No one was home when the fire started on 3587 Cambrian Road at around noon.

The fire caused about $100,000 damage to the building and its contents, the fire department said in a news release.

A firefighter managed to rescue two dogs from the building when they arrived to fight the blaze, fire officials said.

MacLeod, Harder demand school trustee support new Barrhaven school or resign

OTTAWA — City and provincial politicians representing the Barrhaven area are calling on their school trustee counterpart to resign over her decision to support a million-dollar rebuild of a downtown school.

Provincial MPP Lisa MacLeod and Ottawa city Councillor Jan Harder sent a letter Sunday afternoon to school board trustee Donna Blackburn, who represents the Barrhaven area.

“It is never a decision taken lightly by politicians to demand the resignation of another,” they said in the letter, which has since been released publicly. “However given your actions it is clear you have lost the confidence of our community.”

Blackburn voted in favour of a $15-million rebuild of Broadview Public School at a meeting last week, which would have prioritized putting money toward the school’s rebuild over the construction of new schools. The vote went against the advice of Ottawa-Carleton District School Board staff who recommended trustees allocate $4 million to repair the school instead.
