Today the HMBCA sent a letter to City Councillor Jan Harder asking for quick action to update the Hunting Regulations in and around our community.
Late last week a stray long gun bullet was discovered in a home on the Western edge of Half Moon Bay. While the Ottawa Police investigation continues, the HMBCA raised the question of if, or why, rifles can be discharged in the areas surrounding Half Moon Bay. It has since been discovered that the Schedule 1, Ward 3, Plan 1 “Discharge of Firearms Not Permitted” map has not been modified since May 31st 2002. As our community was built much later than 2002, we are not within the "Discharge of Firearms Not Permitted" area.

As you are well aware a stray bullet from a long gun entered a home in our community of Half Moon Bay. The Community Association would like to thank you for your ongoing communication with our representative in sharing information about the investigation.
As you can imagine our community is quite shaken by the matter. Many of the residents in the Half Moon Bay Community Association catchment area reside in our community because we are closer to trails, the Jock River and enjoy an outdoor lifestyle where we are very close to amenities but also have a sense of nature. We are a growing community with the expectations to double in size and the next 3-5 years with many young families.
We are most alarmed at Schedule 1, Ward 3, Plan 1 “Discharge of Firearms Not Permitted” map has not been modified since May 31st 2002. Our entire community spanning from the north/south boundaries of the Jock River to Barnsdale Rd and the east/west boundaries of Greenback Rd to Cedarview Dr is impacted.
We would like to thank you for your public response to the matter at hand and your commitment to work toward a resolution and change the Firearms Boundaries for our community. We would like to extend our support to expedite this process in any way possible. We have an engaged membership who have mobilized in the past to advocate for schools to be established in our community, and given the seriousness of this matter, our expectation is they would rally for this amendment to be accelerated.
We look forward to working with you on this matter, appreciate the ongoing communication and will wait to hear about next steps from your office.
