Tips for a successful Garage Sale this Saturday, June 7th

The Half Moon Bay Community Garage Sale is this Saturday, June 7th and we want everyone’s sale to be a huge success!

Here are some tips for a successful Garage Sale:

  • Post signage for your sale
    • The Half Moon Bay Community Association has advertised our sale through large signs and advertising online and in newspapers this week.
    • We recommend posting your own signs in your immediate area to help direct shoppers to your street.
    • A map of our community displaying the majority of registered homes will be distributed for you to hand out to shoppers. Help your neighbours out by letting shoppers know that the entire community is open for business!
  • Price your items
    • Some shoppers may not ask for prices and walk away instead.
  • Organize and arrange your items
    • Organization will make it easier for shoppers to quickly see your items for sale and find that treasure they’re looking for.
  • Be prepared to negotiate
    • Everyone likes a deal, so be prepared to have some friendly negotiation.
    • A great tactic to use is bundling. Offer deals to shoppers who are buying multiple items. Everyone wins!
  • Donate your leftover items
    • June 7th & 8th is Giveaway Weekend in the City of Ottawa! If you have leftover items that you can’t keep for another sale, consider leaving them at the end of your driveway with a “FREE” sign on them.
    • There are many organizations and businesses in Ottawa who accept donations of many goods. It’s a great chance to help out some charities and keep things out of the garbage at the same time.

Items you may not be allowed to sell

It’s important to know that there are some items that are illegal to re-sell in Canada. Health Canada has a number of online resources to help guide people when deciding what to buy or sell during these events. It is important to note that everyone holding a garage sale is legally responsible to ensure that products being sold meet current safety standards.

Many baby and childrens products are heavily regulated. For more information visit the Facts for Garage Sale Vendors page from Health Canada.
